Cats like many animals live in a order or group. They see their owner as the alpha, the ruler.

To bring them food aka dead mice, birds, etc is presenting a gift to the alpha. Its a show of appreciation.

Big cats (especially lions) live in large groups in the wild, and those groups have leaders. When one of the group makes a catch, they bring it back to the leader so the whole group can partake of the meal.
Even though cats are domesticated (dogs have been domesticated far longer than cats), they still retain some wild traits. Outdoor cats see their owners as the leader of their group and bring their catches to them so they can share the food (they don't understand that humans don't eat mice, etc).

Hello,

I have had outdoor cats in the past, although I now have indoor cats. When an outdoor cat brings you a catch, he is showing you what he has caught, and is now looking for praise.

Whether it be a mouse, snake, or other rodent, a cat will kill it, catch it, and then bring it to you. Many times with a mouse, a cat will want you to see it before he consumes it. Mine did it all the time, and would wait until I praised them for it before they took it off and ate it.

You have to realize, your cat looks up to you. In the wild, when a cat catches dinner, they bring it home to share with the pack. To your cat, you are part of the pack. Your cat is just returning a favor. You feed your cat everyday, right. Well, your cat wants to let you know that it loves you. It wants to feed you , too. It just doesn't understand that you don't eat the same things. SO, just be happy that your cat loves you.

I think it is because they are proud of their accomplishment and want to show it to you. Our mostly outdoor cat was a stray that adopted us. She recently had 4 kittens that we've been keeping in the house since we have a large population of raccoons around and they will kill kittens. Mama Cat recently began bringing dead things up to the deck and I think she is doing that to feed her babies and to teach them how to hunt. During the day, we've been putting them outside with her and she sits by and watches while the babies play with whatever dead prize she's brought them. Later we take it and throw it in the weeds away from the house. Kinda gross, but that is how cats are.

It's a gift. That's what cats do. It's their way of saying, "Here mom (or dad)...look what a good hunter I am and what I've brought you." It's their instict to bring food back to their home. My kitty used to bring me perfectly dead but perfectly preserved mice, baby bunnies (BROKE my heart), chipmunks and very large dragonflies, all lying there in perfect condition as if they were asleep. I ended up with a little pet cemetary behind my fence after having to bury all those little critters after my son ended up seeing them. Needless to say I no longer allow my cats outside, for this and many other reasons.

If a cat brings you a dead mouse or bird etc; you might think that it is doing that to say, "Look what I just did! Aren't you proud of me?" But no. Cats bring you their catches because they think they are safe with you. Trust me. My cat used to do it.

Contrary to popular belief, cats are group animals. In a pride, female lions catch meat for the whole group. Your cat is doing the same.
It also wants you to be proud of it- many cats see their owners as their mothers. Also, your doorstep is his/her territory; a good place to deposit that catch.
Some cats don't, of course. Why share that delectable morsel? You never sit down and enjoy it with them, you just toss it (of course, Kitty may suspect you are hording).

For the same reason that you would give a close friend a gift or cook dinner for someone. They love you and since they can't buy you a card, bringing you their latest kill is the next best thing. It sounds weird but you have to remember they are wild animals.

They are trying to teach you how to kill your own food.

The first time they bring you a mouse it will be dead.
The second time they bring it to you it will be almost dead, and they will kill it in front of you.
The third time they will bring it you still alive and they want you to kill it.

Weird, I know, but cats have funny instincts!
