Vallarta has one of the cleanest water systems in Mexico. A friend knows the British engineer that designed the plant - who still lives there.

Still .. it's Mexico and bottled water is the safe way to go. Buy the Coke or Pepsi brands of water rather than use carbonated if you are worried.

The water in Puerto Vallarta is wonderful. It's the old underground pipes that allow seepage. The hotels and timeshares have their own filtration system and the water is good to drink. We have been going to Puerto Vallarta for many years and have had no problem. In some of the older places and some old restaurants, we drink bottled water or cervezza. When in doubt do bottled water. If you stay at a time share and shop for fresh vegetables and fruit, you can find little bottles of medicine in the veggie department. Just add the recommended amount of drops in enough water to cover the veggies or fruit and soak for about 10 to 15 minutes before using. We soak everything when we get back from shopping then refrigerate. Then everything is ready to eat or cook. We have been going for years and have taken our families (grandchildren and all). Everyone does just fine. Puerto Vallarta is wonderful. We love the place, we love the people, we drink the water, most of the time.

I have been to Puerto Vallarta 15 times since 1995 and have always drank the water. If the filtration system is not working, they will tell you. You should also see a notice near the front desk of the hotel when the last time the water was checked.

Puerta Vallarta has been working for a number of years to upgrade the water system, and a number of larger hotels have water filtration in operation. That said I drink bottled water PERIOD.

Don't drink the water !! Drink Bottled water only or you could get a parasite or the runs from a water bacteria and that could ruin a perfectly good vacation !!

No it is not safe. Drink carbonated bottled water, not just plain bottled water because sometimes they put the local water in bottles and you think you are getting bottled but your not. If it is carbonated and you see the bubbles then you know that it has been properly processed.

I certainly would question the hotels filtration system. Don't want to ruin your vacation, drink bottled water only.

From experience, avoid the water and anything that comes in contact with water from a kitchen like salads. Not easy to do...you should even also consider brushing your teeth with bottled water. It sounds like a big deal, but I have never been as sick as I was when I came back from my first trip to Mexico.

I always bring a bottle of pink bismouth (pept-bismol) & drink it every day I am in mexico as preventative maintenence and up to THREE days after I get back. It works decently to prevent stomach problems.

Best of luck.

Just got back a week ago. I drank at many of the restaurants in the Malecon---Tequila's and Palomas. No problem. we stayed @ dreams resort, drank water -0- problem. But at many of the hotels, they provide free bottled agua. In short, do what you feel is comfortable. The bottle of water costs less than a buck in most liquor stores in the Malecon.

Filtration isn't good enough. Do not drink any unbottled water. Also, you may take a Pepto Bismol tabet before every meal as a preventative.
