I believe an underlying motivation for all people is to be loved. But before they figure out that the best to be loved is to love others, they act in all sorts of ways to gain the love of others.

So when we're kids, we brag to make ourselves look great so that others will love us. As we get older, we start to realize that people don't like braggarts, so we simply reverse the process -- we put others down in order to look better and to get more love. I believe this is behind a lot of gossip, if not all.

This is especially appealing to those who DON'T think highly of themselves and who feel that others won't automatically see their value.

By the way ... I believe this also explains many people who are after "greatness" of any kind -- money, power, etc. They believe that these things will bring them the love that, for whatever reason they feel is missing. Of course this doesn't account for those who HAVE figured out the secret of being loved, and who earn their ways into wealth or power (etc.) in order to do their part in helping the world.

A lot lof times, people gossip simply because they don't have anything REAL to talk about... gossip is a quick way to make friends because most people tend to enjoy hearing gossip and gossiping themselves and I have met a lot of people who have little or no social life outside of the gossiping that they do - you know, some people have really boring lives...

and besides that, it's human nature to want to look down on other people and try to make yourself out to be better... I think that even if you don't actually speak any gossip or anything, everyone still says in their head "oh that girl is just a whore, you don't want her anyways" or "he is so lame he probably has hair on the palm of his hand" to justify their actions in the past or to feel better about themselves now.

The best thing to do is just to not take any part in it because although it can be fun, it always just drags you down in the end...

Some people I know gossip to get cool. Like if you know or even don't know something that's exciting that others don't about someone else and they find out, every one is going to want to talk to you to find out what.I think personally people judge others is for one they are probably insecure about themselves and need to look unto another that is not so great to better themselves and any ways what ever it is it will always be wrong.

most gossip is harmless- it helps bonding in groups and helps people know their friends, enemies , its a way of finding information about others without them knowing, or bothering them etc
when gossip becomes malicious it really just becomes bullying- making an individual unhappy just for being them- and is intolerable.
Sometimes the line between gossip and bullying becomes blurred, but I always think- if the person you were talking about walked in the room would you be able to continue the conversation?
If the answer is yes, then it's just gossip- everything else is bullying.
That's my opinion!

beacuse gossip is a shallow and quick thinker.
people don't have time to look on what's on behind or what's the good point on it.
it's a nature of society nowadays, play safely, and blame someone else, and get your back up by telling everybody that you're the right one.
everbody's want to be the winner.

As someone once told me, it gives them something to talk about because their own lives are so boring that they need something to keep them occupied. People take much more pleasure in finding something wrong with someone else, rather then themselves, especially if they don't like that person.

I don't really know. I guess people want to feel superior by pointing out the flaws in other people to put themselves on a higher pedastel. It's really uncalled for but really addictive.

Everyone likes to feel that they are more put-together, smarter, more attractive and better than everyone else. Someone else's stupidity is like a reminder of our own fabulousness.
