I'm looking for this in Lafayette, Louisiana or the surrounding area. Maybe a 0-30 mile radius.

These are two flight schools at the Lafayette airport. Neither appears to have a web page so you'll have to call them up and ask about rates. I'd expect aircraft rental to be in the range of 80-100 dollars an hour and instructor time 20-40 an hour. Basic training requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight time, but Lafayette is a large tower controlled aiport which slows things down a bit, so expect 60-70 hours before you take your check ride and get your ticket. Not all of that time requires an instructor, though. As a student, once you solo at 10-15 hours, you'll practice landings and takeoffs solo, and there are three required solo cross-country flights.

Statistics show that the average flight training costs to obtain a private pilot's license was just above $5,000 only a few years ago. I can't imagine it being any higher than $6,000 these days, even factoring in inflation and a slower learning curve. As long as you have the finances in place, drive to the local airport and interview some potential flight schools and instructors to find the person and place you'll have the greatest compatibility with. Good luck to you during your flying!

Visit your local airport, there is usually a Flight Instructor at the airport. Expect to pay at least $80 and hour for the plane and gas and $30 and hour for instruction, so it will cost at least $110 per hour until you can solo, after about 12 hours.....then you just need to pay for the plane instead of the plane and instructor. Also, ground school costs about $20 per hour.

Contact the closest airport. Almost all airports have flight schools. A lot of the time you can buy a package deal that saves you money.

Prices vary in different areas of the country.
