Far enough so that they can't throw things at each other.

I don't think there is any best spacing for siblings. From having an only child up to having many children spaced closely together - all family configurations can work well and have pros and cons. I have 4 children. The first 2 are 2 years, 4 months apart. The next 2 are 3 years, 2 months apart. Their youngest sibling was born as a surprise to all of us when they were 18, 15, and 12! I don't recommend, necessarily having 12 years between kids, but it is how our family is and we love it that way. All those built in babysitters are wonderful!! I knew a woman (now deceased) who had 3 children and they were all 5 years apart. She said she did it that way because she wanted each one to have a lot of "mom" time when they were little so she waited until the oldest went to kindergarten to have another child and had #3 when the 2nd one went to school. Worked well for that family.

My brother and I are 1 1/2 years apart and it was a nightmare as a child. It was always a competition with us fighting for moms attention. I've spoken to many people who say the same thing. My other siblings are two years apart and it seemed better. It's all personal preference.

The closer together they are in age the closer they will be to each other. 2 of my brothers are 1 year apart and the next one is 3 years behind. The first 2 are extremely close but the other one isn't really close to them at all. The closer the better.

One year apart because they will always be able to relate to each other. Too much space may create distance or indifference and the older sibling may feel like an uncle or aunt to it's much younger sibling.

I had my first two 15 months apart. At first it was very hard haveing two small ones at the same time, but now that they are both over two years old it's great. I'm trying to get pregnant again so there will be a seperation of around three years between the two youngest. Olny one in diapers, we'll see if that's better.

My experience was having my kids apart by 10 months, it's hard!
What do you think you can handle? I wish I could of waited at least another year or until the oldest was old enough to understand most of what I said. U decide!

I don't really think it should be planned. It happens when it happens. However I would think for sanity reasons, you would want it all done in a 5-6 year period, otherwise they will not as easily relate to their siblings childhood experiences. Not to mention you wont be able to get them out of the house and enjoy your retirement later if you stretch it out too long :P
I was 14 when my youngest sister was born, and I think its a shame that most of us were so much older and starting our own lives when she was still in her formative years.

Im a year apart from my older brother, and 3 years older than my younger brother. I think it doesn't matter, as long as its not like 10 years apart, because that will be such a void.
