I figured i would post this since 4th of july is tomorrow. I think an American is someone who is proud of their country and happy where they come from, someone who would do anything for their country.

I am Mexican-American that was born and raised in the US. I am very happy to be a part of the US and no my parents/grandparents/ or greatgrandparend did not jump/swim/sneak over here. (i hate to hear that cause its ignorant) But ive posted questions before and there is a lot of racist people. I just want to know what people think an American is.

I am my definition of an American. I live in the greatest nation on earth, and enjoy all the freedoms, rights and responsibilities of being an American citizen. I never forget the sacrifices made in order to secure and maintain these freedoms throughout history and in the present, young people are dying as we speak in order to maintain the American way of life and secure democracy for the Iraqi people. We give billions in aid annually throughout the world wherever help is needed, who came to Americas aid when Katrina stomped the gulf coast ? Americans! thats who. Being American is being whatever your heart desires to be, for thats what America is founded upon,FREEDOM!

well im Mexican and most of my family did sneak, jump, and what not.but were here and working paying taxes just like everyone else. In my opinion being an American is summarized in your words. Alot of people think American means white if thats the case they're European Americans. Im in the military just came back from my 3rd combat tour never have i seen so many Americans come together for one cause. We were from all shapes, shades and from all over the world we were and still are a family.

An actual AMERICAN CITIZEN. I agree about the part about being proud of it too. Kudos to you and your ancestors for coming here legally also... but I also think an American should speak English. To be proud of your country, to have come here for the freedom and prosperity, not for selfish reasons, means to learn the unofficial yet accepted language of that country. I also think an American is not somebody who is white, born here, their first language is English, etc. As long as you are a proud citizen, as you are, as well as one with an interesting and respectably legal story, you are an American to me. I am sorry people here have expressed racist acts towards you, but there are some people here not racist. Happy Fourth of July!

I am a multiracial American. I believe being born in America constitutes you as being an American. I don't believe that you have to stand behind the president or every policy of the people to be an American. It's where you were born not who you are. This is the Natives land and we should all be glad to be here where others were killed in the name of so called freedom. There's that word again (freedom). Bush said that's why he started this latest war.

Any citizen of North, South, or Central America is an American (e.g., Canadians, Mexicans, Peruvians, Brazilians, etc.).

You WILL be corrected if you go to another American country and simply say that you are an American.

Ya you are likely to be abused by racists who hate Mexicans and most of the world which hates USA.

So you will get a lot of ignorant and fearful responses here.
You could really make it interesting if you said you were dating a bi-sexual muslim who wants to Save the Whales.

An American is an extremely vain, naive, ignorant, prejudiced creature, easily brainwashed and manipulated by politicians and media men. He is fond of junk food, obssessed with sex, incapable of cool and independent thinking, uncouth, unrefined and utterly disgusting when it comes to manners and conduct. No offense intended. I just wanted to give you an idea of how Americans are commonly perceived nowadays
