I have a suspicion that my ex is monitoring my conversations any way to confirm?

I think bugged is a better description of what may be going on.

Can a bug be activated by calling a number from the phone, then hanging up? I notice that this has happened on several occasions...

Phone will ring at exactly the same time each week, with no one on the other line, series of loud clicks, loud static or get messages, if you'd like to make a call, please hang up and dial again.
Using a 'telephone pickup coil' attached to the ear-piece, or they fit an "in-line tap" with a recording output to record your conversation.
Lines can be tapped at the boxes you see at the corner of your neighborhoods...looks like a small 3 inch cylinder that is clamped onto the lines.
Also look for soldering paste on your car, may have soldered a GPS device to track you.

In this day and age, being able to tell isn't easy. If the tap is done poorly or is lo-tec, then you should be able to hear a click when you pick up the phone. Hi-tec taps are far more difficult. They virtually leave no trace of their existence. A fiber optic wire is ran to the phone line and then hooked up to a computer. As far as cell phones go, any good radio can pick up a cell phone frequency. Unless your ex is somekind of teck geek, the chances of him being able to tap your phone are very low.

Sounds like a show on TV. It's hard to believe someone would actually do that but I guess there are some crazies out there. I think I would get a new cell phone and number but have you thought that maybe your ex has put a spy cam somewhere in something in your house?

You can not.

Ask a spy store for a bug detector. There are ones that can tell if somebody is listening. Hard line only though. Cells are very hard to tap as they move around and 'switch channels' all the time. Unless he (or she) has hired the FBI or NSA you can assume your cell is clear.

What he is doing is illegal. It would be very tough to do it on a cellphone, but have your phone number changed at home if you do suspect anything or just do not use that phone for call you don't want to hear. Otherwise call your local police dept and ask if they know how to check it...I am sure they do.

Well its highly unlikely, but if you really were paranoid enough you could check the phone wires in you house and the ones leading into it from outside to make sure nobody has attached anything to them that shouldn't be there. You should also take your phones and connection boxes apart to see if theres anything been put inside or on them.

by law any phone line that is tapped/recording conversation has to give a beep sound at timed intervals. if you are talking and you hear a beep tone (no matter how slight) you are probably not having a private conversation. change your number -- preferably unlisted.
