195 miles - if you take US 441 to US 23, then I-985/85 into Atlanta.
267 miles - if you go via Knoxville (I-40) and Chattanooga (I-75).
Longer, but almost all Interstate.

It's not that far at all. It only takes about 2.5 hours from ATL to Knoxville. Gatlinburg is about 45 mins to 1 hour from Knoxville. So, round trip...about 3.5 hours. It also depends on when you travel, though. If you hit the roads during ATL's rush hour time, then you can expect to add quite a bit of time to your travel. Also, once you get into Gatlinburg, it is not uncommon to have traffic delays, especially if it's on Friday or Sunday (when people are coming or going from the city).

lobro's answer is the most accurate. I live in Maryville Tn and went to Grad school in Atlanta... it would take me right at 3 hours one way... and Gatlinburg is about another 45 min from here.. so if you are good enough at maneuvering ATL traffic to get out of town before rush hour, the trip from say Downtown ATL to Gatlinburg should be right about 4 hours...

I live right outside of Gatlinburg and with an average amount of traffic and a few stops to eat and use the bathroom, it should take 7-8 hours.
