Absolute try the shelters first and don't dismiss picking a dog thats a bit older. Many times they are already housebroken and you can judge the dogs personality. The best dogs I have ever owned are mutts that came from the pound. I currently have two dogs that are almost 14 years old and I adopted both when 1 was a puppy and the other was 3 years old. I love them more than anything.

I live in new jersey and i got my dog at an animal shelter close to my house. I suggest u go there.
