You can spin sugar. Heat it to melting w/o caramelizing it, then grab a whisk, dip it in, and quickly drip it across a wooden rack. Keep doing that. It should dry in the air before it lands on the wood rack. You will have to practice a lot to get the strings of sugar as fine as a machine does it.
Just open your wallet a bit wider and rent a machine, for pete's sake!
