you people are ALL WRONG
By definition a fruit is what a plant produces to reproduce. If it has a seed it is a fruit. Squash, watermelon, peppers, olives, nuts, tomatos, beans, corn, rice, and apples..... these are all produced by a parent plant and will reproduce to be another plant...... they are fruits....
Vegetables: carrots, potato, celery, lettuce, brocolli..... these are not produced by the plant to reproduce with diferent genetics....

sorry to be nit picky....... I got this lesson from a botany class..... but of course in culinary school they tried to teach me otherwise...

It is a vegetable. A lot of people make the mistake thinking tomato is a vegetable and it is a fruit.
