Actually, the true translation is "thou shall not murder". There's a big difference between the words "kill" and "murder".

Murdering someone is taking their life when they are innocent of any wrong-doing. This is what God forbids in the commandments. This is why in the Old Testament stoning was allowed. People who committed crimes were allowed to be stoned to death.

However, after Jesus came and died for everyone, things changed. Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love one another.

That is an open ended commandment
And its not just about soldiers of religious wars. The commandment allows to kill because it did not state what circumstances not to kill. As with any law it is open for debate as this one is, soldiers are follower of a government or sect and are acting on their behalf. So they are held blameless unless they commit murder then they themselves have committed a crime.
That commandment from god is in respect to unnecessary killing of innocent human being, where as the common people do not understand that the powerful people use the word of God to hold us accountable for their actions. The law can serve and protect however it can also be misused and cause destruction. You and me are servants to the rich and powerful and should obey their command because we were born into the society created. The leaders of the worlds are they blame for any lose of life due to war.

The commandment is most clearly translated from the original languages as "Thou shall do no murder"

Now the original meaning is also clear.

Taking innocent life is never allowed. Defending one's self, family, home, country has always been allowed.

If deadly force is necessary to stop an attacker, no sin is commited.

Of course, this assumes that there was no other way to properly resolve the situation.

Soldiers who kill in a religious battle will most likely have to repent and seek forgiveness from God, or otherwise face judgment at the time of their death with sins on their conscience. If God instructed them to fight, in the case of The Crusades, Joan of Arc, etc. then most likely God will forgive their sins.

This concerns the murder of an innocent.

The Bible is replete with battles (good vs evil etc).

In 2Kings 19:35 an angel killed 185,000 soldiers in one night.

God, being God, will decide the hearts of the soldiers in any war such as: are they doing it because they enjoy killing? or are they doing it to defend others, or because they have to (got drafted into a countries army, sent out to war).

The true meaning of that is a real tough one. Do we KILL germs, KILL weeds ect ect. You will have to answer that one for yourself and believe me its not that easy....Regarding a soldiers duties, I think God forgives the KILLING part because their motives outweighed the KILLING part, thus Killing evil to Support good would be ok...
