I have considered names like, "Porter", "Scout", "Roscoe", "Major", and most recently "Shadow". He is predominantly Black. "Shadow" seems to work well given the fact he is a Tri colored Collie, with his hind legs brown in front and black in the back. Looks like they have a built in shadow. He also appears to be wearing a mask on his now very cute face. His back is completely black except for a white spot where his color would normally be. (Things I'm looking for in a name - Something, snazy, irish, trendy, friendly, matching that of a calm, sweet, smart, good looking dog...)

I am a collie rescuer, so I love your question. Male Collies I have fostered have been named Jacob (he was a tri), Dakota, Skye, Chase, Ranger, Bailey, Joey, Winston, Hank, Lance. A recent one was named Ozzie!!
A collie should have a very dignified name. I love Scout for a tri! I also like your choice of Roscoe and Major. Laddie is also a very good collie name. If you want to find some good collie names, go to Petfinder and search for collies and look and see what some of the name are of other collies that are in rescue.
For those who don't know collie colors, tris are predominately black. Their faces are tan, except for a black mask around their eyes. The have white legs sometimes with tan, feet, ruff--the front chest, and collar. Collie tails also have a white tip!!
My personal collie is a sable & white named Gracie (she came from rescue with that name), and when I was a kid I had one named Bonnie. British type names are well suited to collies.
My Shetland Sheepdog's (similar to Collie, but smaller) name is Katie Scarlett after Gone With the Wind. Rhett is a good collie name too. There are so many good ones.
How about Sean/Shawn? Connor? Dougall? Trevor? Taylor? Parker? Prince? Duke? Merlin? Tyler?
Good luck with your collie!! They are the best dogs. Be sure and watch for the new Lassie movie that opens Sept 1st.

snazy, irish, trendy, friendly?? Your Collie is going to be your friend and companion, not a status symbol. Name your friend with a name the dog will like. Most dogs need a two syllable name that it will answer to. Long names are good for people, but dogs only hear the first few symbols before they respond.
Question: if you had black hair, would you like to called Blackhead? Same goes for your Collie. Find a name that matched the personality of the dog.
