Is your life happier without the psychological attachment to "its ok when I die I go to fairy tale land"?

Cause mine is, I'm living more for today and less for fairy tale land.

I'm much happier as an atheist than as a catholic, and for the very reason you cite: When you stop wishing and wondering about how to secure entry into that never-never-land, then you're free to make the most of today and tomorrow.

Which is really all we have.

Well, I'm happy that you are happy, and when I'm in fairy tale land I'll be thinkin' about ya and hoping that you are happy still....well, wherever it is that you will be going. I am truly tired of people making generalizations on here. Just because someone is a Christian does not make them some fundamentalist freak who preaches at everyone and looks down on those who have not chosen Christianity. All Christians are not the same, just as all muslims are not the same, and so on and so on.....so enough with the generalizations already!

I find the atheist life to be a bit lonely at times, but that's simply because there's so few of us. But that's not the fault of atheism. That's the fault of society.

However, as a personal example, I like to compare my happiness to that of an ex of mine. She was a Christian. And she had a T-shirt that pretty much summed up her life... It said, "Keep your face in the sunshine, and you'll never see the clouds"

I always thought that was a deeply flawed philosophy, and one that I could never adhere to. What that means to me is, "Don't face reality, and you'll never see what makes you sad."

A lof of people with their face in the sunshine (God) don't see the ugly realities that many atheists do. But that doesn't mean they don't exist, and won't affect you. This ex that I mentioned above was one of the most miserable people I've ever known. And she never knew why. But she was rarely in a good mood. But basically, she was clueless about a great many things. And she never put things in motion that would eliminate problems, to thereby make her life easier.

Instead, she kept her "face in the sunshine", while the clouds snuck up behind her and bit her on the ***. :) I think that's the difference. Atheists can appear to be "cynical", in the eyes of the blind. But the truth is, atheists are more hands-on, and will truly achieve solutions to problems, rather than ignoring them or "accepting" them as "God's will". So in the long run... yes, we'll be happier.

I think if you have to ask if you are happier then it probably means you aren't. And I hate to think about all the people who have died thinking that what happens after death is just "fairy tale land".

I believe so. Most of the christians I know say that they are happy but when you talk to them, all they do is complain.

As for living for today, I completely agree! I believe that this childisn notion of "heaven" has held more people back from actually making this a better world, than any other force in history.
It needs to be sent to the ash-heap of history.

Happiness is a choice...you either choose to be or you don't. It has nothing to do with believing in God, Darwinism or Fairytale Land. All that anyone can do is live in the here and now regardless of what you believe. It all amounts to choices and this is something that we all are entitled to.

I think so.

I think the sentence 'this life is a test' is the greatest crime that religion has ever perpetuated on humanity... taking away the one thing that we have - this mortal life - and telling people that the real life is the one to come...

My husband and I are having a lot of fun with FSM right now. Agnostic works for me, honestly. My life is better now than it ever was when I had religion.
