Our scheduled arrival at LAX, on an international flight, is 12.40pm. We want to go straight to Washington DC. I figure we won't be ready to board a flight until about 4pm (right?). Are there really no flights then (except perhaps those that require you to regard the plane as your 2nd home)? We don't mind arriving at 1am, but maybe noise controls prevent planes from landing then? If we stay in LA overnight, we will waste the next day getting to DC. Help!

There are noise controls at the DC airports, especially Washington's National (DCA). Generally flights do not land there after about midnight, unless they are late.

But, you should be able to get a flight to DC, maybe on a different airline than your internatyional which will get you there before midnight. The coast to coast flight is about 5 hours and ther is a 3 hour time difference, so you should be able to get there by 8 or 9:00 PM.

Don't think of it as a waste of a day. Spend the day exploring Los Angeles. There is a lot to see and do here.
