wikipedia is a very good source for almost anything (so long as it is only for "general knowledge") :

A quick history of TKD.
Thousands of years ago, there was an art called Taekeyon. It involved mostly striked although it included a few grapples.
It was a popular art in Korea unti the Confucian revolution in Korea. Violence was abhored and Taekeyon was practiced underground. It was practiced underground until the Japanese invaded Korea and made all Korean arts illegal.
General Choi, a Korean general in the Japanese army still had knowledge of the old Korean styles and incorporated some of the old Korean styles into Karate (Don't let any prideful TKD practicioner or Korean tell you otherwise, we can trace our roots to Karate).
He incorporated the kicks and some of the punches of Taekeyon into shotokan karate, inventing an entire new martial art called Korean style Karate.
To avoid confusion between the two arts in the world's eyes, Korea decided to call the new art Tae Kwon Do (Or art of the fist and foot)
And that's how TKD was born.

There is an American Tae Kwon Do Association whose headquarter is in Little Rock, AR. You can google that to get the history of Tae Kwon Do in America. The development of their weapons in Korea is an interesting story. The association's link is below.

There is the internet and the local library of course.
Sport shops and good book shops
If you are thinking of taking it up then ,
You could also visit your local or nearset sports centre and ask what kind of martial arts they teach. If they teach tai kwon do then ask to speak to an instructor. Also look up martial arts schools in the yellow pages or or other social centres

Look up information on General Choi. He was the creator of the modern day TaeKwon Do. His son now is the president of the ITF (International TaeKwon Do Federation). You'll find that there are two styles of TKD, WTF, and ITF. It all boils down to being created by the one man....General Choi. Look him up on Wiki.
Tae Kwon!
