Unfortunately, it can be many things. An incompetent uterus, there may be something wrong with the baby and nature is taking its course, the mother is under too much stress.....the causes are endless.

Sunshine...I have always heard it said that a miscarriage is nature's way of ending a pregnancy that is not viable due to birth defects etc. Miscarrage is such a SAD, SAD heartbreaking thing. I had one when I was nine weeks pregnant. It was heartbreaking. Miscarrage at four months would be devestating. If you are going through one, my heart goes out to you.
Be sure and read the latest medical info out there on the subject. I know that some women also do not have enough of the proper hormones to maintain a pregnancy past a certain point and medical intervention can do miracles with their pregnancies.
Best wishes!!! You are in my prayers.

My obgyn told me when I was pregnant, if the child is strong and meant to be born there is nothing you can do (with in normal activities) to cause a miscarriage, but in the same token if the child is not strong and not meant to be born, there is next to nothing you can do to carry it to full term. I hope you are asking because you are trying to avoid a miscarriage, and not because to want to cause one.
