A resident of the U.S. can only be out of the country how long per year

You cannot be out of the country for a year or more on any given trip. If you plan on being out for more than a year you need to apply for I-131 (Re-Entry permit).

If your are from Central America the longest you can be out is 6 months. You have to at least step foot in the US to renew the 6 month period. If you are not from Central America than it is best to check with the Embassy from your country HERE in the US, by phone or whatever. Once you are in the country sometimes the Embassy LIES. So check it out here first.

you can not be gone for periods of more than one year. if you are the service can take your greencard from you because you have abandoned your residence.

if you plan on applying for us citizenship you should not stay out for more than one year or continously or more tha 900 days in a five year period. if you plan on applying look at uscis.gov and look for naturalization guidelines.

As far as I know if you were born here you never lose your citizenship, no matter how long you are away.
