My cat licks hysterically when we scratch her on her back, in the area closest to her tail. The faster we scratch the more she licks herself. At first, when we start scratching her, she licks up into the sky, and then puts her head down and licks herself. As soon as we stop scratching her, she immediately turns off and stops licking herself. Can anyone explain this to me? Thank you!

It means your cat really enjoys it. Not sure if it's just a pressure point or something in the area that makes your cat go nuts like that lol. Something to do with the nerves maybe. A lot of animals do that (or something similar) when petting and scratching in a spot they like.

The reason is because they are itchy there. By you scratching it for them they go through the motions as if they are scratching themselves. My cat does this and I asked my vet, it could mean dermatological problems as well or even fleas. My vet suggested using a deshedding comb to get rid of the undercoat and let the skin breathe a bit. I did that and it helped him so much. But you should get her looked at and rule out any major problems.

Cats have nerves at the base of their back near their tales...mine does the same thing, and its nothing to worry about. My cat LOVES to be scratched there, but GENTLY! And don't overdue it by scratching hard, or for very long times. She also loves being scratched around her ears, and along her cheeks...so I combine these when she jumps on the back of my office chair and starts rubbing in my hair! :) It's her way of saying "pay attention to ME, not your computer!" :)

Cats always react when touched in that area. Don't worry, it's completely normal and harmless.

your cat is enjoying all that massaging and petting . as for the licking its likely just a territorial thing they just have it in them to keep themselves clean all the time.. my cat does that to .. i touch her ..pet her and right away she cleans .. she is just washing off your scent thats all.. bren
