My Love Bird is now over 8 years old and apart from having a few green feathers turn to yellow seems to be as sprightly as the day he was hatched! How much longer am I likely to enjoy his company?

AVERAGE LIFESPAN: I think 15 years is common. I think 30 years is not unheard of ut is rare. When checking around on sites or in books, be aware that the AVERAGE or common age life expectancy is based upon many things.. including stupid things such as somebody leaving the window open and birds wings are not clipped, a dog getting the bird, feeding the bird something they didn't know was poison, yada yada yada.. So if you treat your bird well and feed it well, it will probably live quite a long time.

BOREDOM: Just like us humans.. give him plenty to do. Give him toys.. rotate the toys.. leave some in take some out. Keep his lil' birdie mind active. Talk to him lots and play with him lots.. teach him tricks.

But just like humans, they can come down with colds, diseases and other things.

VET: If you have an avian vet (they're not easy to find) near by you, and you're really concerned about your birds health, bring it in for a yearly checkup.

FOOD: Many people feed their parrots a really bad fatty diet like sunflowers and other. If you want to feed it a really good diet, get a food such as zupreem. They look like little fruit shapes. And also give them lots of fruits and veggies.

If your bird isn't used to or doesn't like fruits and veggies.. cut some up and cook them in cornbread. I haven't found a bird that won't take stuff via some good homemade cornbread. (not from the box)

LOVE: Loss of love can kill an animal too! I grew up with about a dozen pairs of birds. I left home at 15 and where I was moving to they wouldn't take birds. It was my only option.. So I left all my birds at my parents house including the one that was so close to me he even slept on the pillow next to mine. My mother called me, told me that he wouldn't eat - he starved himself to death. Nice of her to tell me after the fact humm? *rolls eyes*.

Anyway., so love him forever and he will probably live a long time.

Note: others reading may wonder about their parrot's life span. Typically the smaller the bird the shorter the life span. i.e. averages: a budgie I think is about 15 years, lovebird 20, cockatiel 15-20, senegal 45, african gray 60, macaw 75+

What kind of bird? I have an african gray. Named Grayson! His life span is 70-80 yrs. He is now one year old. Keep your bird happy healthy and he should live a long life. I can't tell you exactly the yrs. Life is short no one knows when animals or people die. It's all in God's hands.

As long as you feed it a quality seed mixture supplemented with fresh fruits and vegatables, with lots of social interaction, your lovebid could potentially live to be 20 years old

Best Of Luck Joe

"Lovebirds can live to be anywhere from 15 to 20 years allthough some may live to be 30 years old.
The lenth of time your lovebird lives for is dependable on its surroundings; so if you give it fresh clean water each day and fresh food plus lots of love and attention then your lovebird should live quite some time."

15 to 20 years if they're healthy but if they're not really healthy they only last about 10 years.
