peoples intolerance of others is just an outward sign of an inward insecurity of who they are. If they see something in you that they do not like it usually indicates an insecurity within themselves. right or wrong it just is.

I think the increase in intolerance is a symptom of the "Me" attitude. I didn't say generation because I think the "me" attitude has crossed the generations. Just a few years ago, if you saw someone behaving like a "me" person, it was someone fairly young. Now many older people have adopted the attitude.

The the question about intolerance hinges on whether the behavior affects others. If a person's behavior negatively affects someone else's life then that is not being intolerant.

I've heard it all now ... Alwyn my dear, do you advocate so that we should all sell our property and live in rented accommodation? Because IF we boot people off our properties, they might be hostile to us? And spit in our faces and scrape our cars and kill our dogs?

Is that what you think of illegal immigrants? Now THAT is about as racist as I've ever heard .. in other words, cow tow to illegal immigrants or they may not be nice to you? Why would you presume if you DON'T approve of illegal immigration that all the people who are pro should harm you personally or your property in any way? I'm sure most people are more mature than that, including the majority of the illegals ... I'm also sure that if you did own property and spent your hard earned money on it, you'd want to keep it safe ... weird logic ...

Since this question was posted on the immigration site, I presume it has to do with illegal immigration ... and NO, it really does not have anything to do with being racially intolerant ... it has to do with securing our borders ... we don't know who's crossing the borders, but we do know that they're not all poor honest hard working people wanting to care for their families ... undoubtedly some are just like that, but equally there are criminals, drug pushers, and God knows what coming across ... TB and HIV is being spread, because none of these people have undergone a medical examination, which is a requirement when you apply legally ... just to mention one aspect ...

Of course you can say that American citizens are criminals too ... they have HIV too ... etc., etc. Yes of course, but does it make the situation better by letting more people, about whom we know absolutely nothing, not even their country of origin, across our borders totally unchecked? I mean, where is the logic in all this?

Do you think they really are?

If you mean illegal aliens, consider that there are between 12 and 20 million of them here, and if we were so 'intolerant of others' they would never have developed such a foothold. They would never have been given education and health care at our expense, and the ones who became citizens without being fluent in our language would not have been given translated ballots.

We are extremely tolerant. Unlike in Mexico, for example, illegal immigrants here are not regularly attacked.

We just can't pay for so many, and need to stop. The systems we build to serve our own like education and health care are failing. The life boat is too small for the many who came.

Furthermore, these aren't 'asylum' situations. The countries of origin of most illegal immigrants are at least as rich in natural resources as ours. So they only come here because we make it easier to take their better life at our children's expense than it is to change their own country.

Noone likes having things they need stolen. Enforcement of laws is not intolerance. Inaction in the face of rampant illegality that has ruined our own services in many places would be stupidity.

Let me tell you this: When you point at a person with a index finger, notice how 3 others are pointing at you? and one is pointing to the sky and it is staying without leaning either way?

So, what this means is for every accusation you make of another person, take a look at yourself 3 times as much because there is One above who is neutral and watching all this. He /She is saying "......can we get along........."?

Most intolerant people are ignorant, they have never put in the effort to know others. They are like frogs in the well. They never bothered to look beyond. Just pity them because you are better than those ignorant people in your imagination and thought process.

I'm tolerant. If you want to be and look different that is your right, just as its my right. But when you infringe on me and my rights, then there is an issue to be worked. If you are a criminal, a terrorist or even someone who likes to blast their music so loud that my whole house shakes you are infringing on my rights. If you live next door to me and you paint your house purple and green stripes, you are infringing on my vision of sight and my property value.
To answer your question, I believe tolerance is practiced more than it ever has been, but those that are tolerant are being pushed a little too far sometimes.

I think most people who feel like that are just scared of change. They are used to a certain type and anything else is out of their comfort zone.
Thats the GOOD thing about America:We have so many different cultures living here that everyone SHOULD be adept in handling change and embrace new races and religions.
If only all of of us felt this way((((((((sigh))))))))))))))).Unfortunately, there are people who are raised in racist homes and brought up to feel superior to any race other than their own.The only thing to do for them is to try to teach them that other people are not so bad.We all bleed red, right?

DAR explained intolerance perfectly, and defended it too. Mexicans are often criminals, it's only logic to kick criminals out of the country and therefore Mexicans deserve to get kicked. The world used to belong to everybody, but now that there's borders the world is owned by governments and corporations. Ignorant people - that's people who don't vote, who don't think before they vote or who tell people off for thinking or voting - they personify heavily with their society. Not their governments: their fenced-in safe idea of the world, their mini-environment. When their boundaries are crossed, the safety of their ideas, their world and money is threatened. The world should evolve around yourself, and if it doesn't, grab your gun.

A right-wing politician once explained his simple logic to me: "Consider your country a house, well stocked and beautifully furnished. You have a mortgage on it, spent years building it, and now everyone in your street is keen on your house. So everyone comes over, and they don't go away. They finish what's in your fridge, then come back for more and invite their friends - what would you then do, you socialist dimwit? Of course you'd get angry, you'd toss everyone out, and you'd put a fence up. So that's the logical thing to do. Anyone would do that. And we provide such protection for our nation."

But is that a solution? It might seem 'common sense' ( a word I hate), but if you would continue the analogy.. You'd be safe in your own house if you followed this protectionist agenda, but as soon as you walk down your street, people that you booted out of your house will ignore you, spit in your face or plot wee acts of terrorism against you. They might scratch your car in the driveway, refuse your business at the local shop, kill your dogs, terrify your children. And you'd think it all gruesomely unfair. You'd fight back, retaliate, be a bit like Israel.. Because you're cool, and everyone else is frighteningly bad. Usually if you treat someone like America treats Mexicans, or Israel treats Palestinians, or Germans treated Jews, you get problems in return. I do not condone violence either way, but why does no one do much to prevent it?

I would never kick people from my own property, nor have it stolen or leeched upon by people. I simply won't own a house, I rent one now, and I know my neighbours. When 'the illegal aliens' come over, I'll smile at them from my garden, tell them where to go and if someone faints in front of my doorstep - for lack of food, drink or shelter - I'll patch him upside or get other proper help. Should criminals invade my house I'll call the police, I won't take out my gun and bury them in the backyard (i.e. Guantanamo?). Oh and to the intolerant: I don't rent because I'm poor, nor am I against violence because I'm not a real man, blah blah. Du soll denken, weitergehen! (pardon my French)

Logic is simple. Ignorance is bliss. But.. I think, therefore I am. And no, that's not an incomplete sentence or multiple choice, ya ignorant right-wingies (o;

TO SASHIE: Yes, the easiest way to prove yourself a tolerant person, is to call me a racist for coining terms racists and conservatives came up with. I do have some properties other than a house, some of it was stolen, but things can be replaced. All I am saying is that the world isn't anybody's, and no one can be 'illegal'. But that's not an easy thought - it's a bit like 'evolution' and 'infinity of space' - concepts beyond what you think is safe.

I know you are not supposed to answer a question with another question, but I am going to do it anyways. Just how tolerant is a nation supposed to be? I mean why should we just ignore our borders, and let people come as they please? Where does tolerance end, and stupidity start? Because you can only be so tolerant before it becomes stupidity.

Because people don't care to learn about the interests/cultures/ideology of others. Its ignorance, pure & simple.
