There are many new technologies. I generally watch the technology section on BBC news and other sources. In my view computer aided design would be a good one to go for if it is a career choice you are after.

Depends specifically on your field of interest, but there's cutting edge technology being developed along all fronts. Like the first answerer, "nano technology" is getting a lot of attention, particularly in the MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) which are essentially tiny, tiny little machines. There's a lot of research going in universities about that, but I'm not sure if there's too many real world applications yet.
