Judeo-Christian tradition has taught for thousands of years:
1. Single people should be celibate.
2. Married people should be faithful to each other (adultery is wrong).
3. Married couples should welcome God's gift of children and, therefore, artificial birth control was against the will of God.
People who are already ignoring the more important teachings about chastity (1 and 2) should have no problem ignoring the less important teaching of artificial birth control (3).
It is within the Christian (and Catholic) teaching of the lesser of two evils for an infected spouse to use a condom to help protect the other spouse instead of infecting him or her with a deadly disease.
But condoms are not 100% effective (read the box) and the spouse may be infected and die anyway.
With love in Christ.

Because Pope John Paul II was **NOT** guilty of committing genocide. Rather, what Pope John Paul II was the *TRUTH*, what's more, the people of Africa know he was speaking the Truth. That is why Catholicism is fast becoming a predominant religion in Africa.

First of all it is Pope John Paul II not Jean! Second if everyone remained chaste until marriage and then remained faithful to their spouses we wouldn't have the problem with sexually transmitted diseases that you see now. Our Blessed Father was speaking of committed chaste Christian marriage not the selfish, self gratifying, sleeping around people are giving in to.

Genocide is a strong word, but I agree that the Catholic church is complicit in the spread of AIDS in the Third World and needs to be held responsible. Misinformation is a serious crime.

The Pope didn't tell husbands to cheat on wives with prostitutes.
The Pope didn't tell soldiers to rape women and children.
The Pope didn't tell the people to engage in risky sexual practices.
Allowing condoms would have been a good thing, but would they have been used? It is estimated that much of the spread of HIV is due to rape, incest and prostitution. Those who are true to each other in marriage (or at least in monogamy/monandry) have nothing to worry about.
The message was obviously lost, but would it not have been more productive to teach people to respect themselves, their bodies, their partners?
