People always seem to have them impression, but is it really true, or do short-haired dogs shed just as much but with smaller hairs?

I would like to get a mixed breed dog from a shelter, and I wonder if there is any sense in avoiding long-haired dogs due to the shedding, or will it be the same either way?

It depends on the breed of dog. Some shed more than others but all dogs shed some. Usually the dogs that shed less are terrier types and dogs like schnauzers and poodles, which need haircuts. Personally, I prefer long-haired shedding because you can vacuum it or pick it up as opposed to the short-hairs which are like little barbs that get into your furniture and your eyeballs!

Yes really a long haired dog does shed more then a short haired dog but both really do shed. Depending on the bread of the dog, they may have a additional coat of hair closer to the skin to protect them in cold weather. This include huskies and malamutes while short haired dogs like beagles and short haired dachunds do not have that second coat. There are a few types of dogs that do not shed such as Silky Terriers. If you are worried about shedding, check with the shelter people before you get the dog.

What determines how much a dog will shed is it has hair or fur. For example I have a Pug which has fur; due to this he sheds 365 days per year. I've purchased a Shed Ender comb which works best for grooming him. He has to be combed twice each week and even then sheds.

My other pup is a Pekingese which is long haired. Yes, she has hair not fur. She sheds a little when seasons change, but when I brush her on a normal basis I get very little hair.

Research which breeds have hair V's fur. I didn't know this until I got a pug and EVERYTHING was covered in hair or more accurately fur.

Good Luck

Basically, all dogs shed. Long hair is more noticeable than short hairs.
A dog that has been bred for cold climates, such as Huskies, will shed a lot in the spring, and in hot climates, almost all year long.
Some long haired dogs do not shed much at all.
Research your dog choice on the Internet. There are a lot of sites out there that have this information for you.

Actually--some long haired breeds do shed less than short haired dogs but frankly--the difference is not that much.

Dogs shed. The only dog that doesnt is one of those hairless dogs.

If a person is concerned about shedding they probally should not have a dog or cat.
However--good grooming reduces how much shedding is left on your carpet during the two times a yr that dogs shed a lot.

I both types of dogs--my short haired dog sheds bad--my long hair sheds in clumps and I have him groomed (shaved) during the summer and he doesnt shed once I do that.

Some long-haired dogs shed alot, some shed very little. It all depends on the breed or breeds that they are. It is the same way with short-haired dogs.

okay short haired dog shed way
more then long haired dogs do
but when ever you brush the
long haired dog you have to watch
the hair because they are gonna
have lots of hair in the brush and
you have to watch it ok if you are
gonna get a dog i would buy a long
hair dog but if you don't want to
have to do work i would get a short
haired dog not an ankle bitter i'm not
saying ankle biter are okay at sometimes
well like i was saying you can't get a
long haired mix breed dog because
they are the ones that people buy them
for lots of money and thats not right even
though i'm one of them people who would
rether have a full breed dog then a mutt
but hey the world can't be perfect so i
have only one mutt with is a lad/tarrier
and her name is molly well any way i
when to a nother paragrap srry i really
srry and no there is no reson to avoid
long haired besides more work>!~

I have a short haired dog that sheds so damn much its insane.
I actually had to take the vacuum cleaner apart the other day to clear the clog his hair has caused.
So no I would have to disagree with long haired dogs shedding more than short haired ones.

By rights bolth dogs will shed the same but if you keep them bushed it will not be as bad. Just note if you get a dog with realy shot hair like a bulldog. The hair is so short it is hard to get up. I have that problem with my bullie. It is almost like needles.

I have 3 Shih Tzu in my home and you are likely to find a hair from one of the 3 human women here then the dogs.
Shih Tzu rarly shed and are some of the longest haired dogs you can get.
