A ratio is a relationship of quantity. For example, when you mix up juice from a concentrate, it may say add 1 part of the concentrate to 5 parts water. So the ratio of concentrate to water is 1:5. You can also look at forex rates as a ratio. At the moment 1 American dollar may buy, for example, 3 Australian dollars. So the ratio of the value of an american dollar and an australian dollar is 1:3

The number of times one quantity contains another quantity.
Fr eg the ratio of water to fertiliser is 9:1 this means the mixture contains nine times as much water as fertiliser.

a ratio is comparing one thing to another...example:
there is 6 apples and 12 oranges. you have one apple for every two oranges right? then a "ratio" is 1:2 (or one to two.)
