Last night, I woke up with intense pain in my right shoulder. When I was fully awake, it was impossible to move my right arm for several minutes. In a few minutes, the pain resolved and using my left arm, I was able to move my right arm again. Eventually, within 20 minutes, the arm became normal again. I was alseep on my back, and not on my side, so I wasn't compressing any nerves...

Any ideas?

even on your back a nerve from your neck could create the problem you're experiencing. if that was the only symtom, a nerve is most likely to blame. i would get it checked by your doctor to be on the safe side. do you remember if there was a tingling sensation? or were you just unable to move your arm? this could be important.

Paralysing of the nerve occurs when bio-electricity travelling to the arm reduces suddenly. Blood circulation may also have been reduced temporarily there.

This kind of events indicate starting of Vata symptoms in Ayurveda. When the event of paralysing is only for a short time, it can be guessed as a symptom of Aamvata. Check up fingers of hands, backside, just below nails. Do you observe any swelling anytime, any cramps anywhere in body?
Rheumatism enters the body in this manner by random swellings, pains, stiffnesses, paralysing of motor functions.
Meet some alternative therapist in neighbourhood.
Such problems are better treated in alternative theories.

This case is what they called ahesive capsulitis. Just do some pendular effect on your shoulder and it will resolve but before doing it put some hot compress for 20 minutes then stretch for 8 times with 5 seconds hold.

Short of what has been mentioned already, I suffer from chronic subluxation of the shoulder. It can sometimes occur when I am asleep with my arms extended and hands behind my head. One of my shoulder will pop out and hurts intensely. I struggle to stand unable to move by affected extremity and eventually it pops back in when I dangle my arm. When this is happening, i can't move my arm and it goes numb.

You should definitely get it checked out anyway. If it's a pinched nerve, you'll be glad you got it checked. My dad has had an ICD for a few years. He hasn't had any problems like what you're describing. How long has it been since that initial three week period? You could just be healing slower than usual.

It still sounds like some nerve entrapment that eventually worked it's way out..if this continues you need to see your doctor..
