Food goes to stomach first, where some proteins get digested using acids there. Next it is pushed to beginning part of small intestines termed duodenum. here the digestive juices from pancreas and bile from liver come and digest rest of the food. Now if some food remains undigested, then, after it reaches large intestine or Colon, the bacterias of various types (nearly 300 types are there, 100 of them are friendly) decompose the food producing gas. This gas produces flatulence. There are parasites too, which produce toxins by decomposing the food. This give bad smell to gas. IF proteins and fat consumption more, more bad smell.

There are 2 places where gas comes from. Swallowing air is one place and can account for a good volume if you chug drinks, don't chew food before swallowing or drink lots of sodas.
The other place is in the large intestine. Bacteria that reside there begin to digest food that you didn't or couldn't digest. Gas is a result.
