Actually up to my knowledge(As I am not a doctor)it is not good. In past when there are no flexible synthetic lens(glass lens) if we slept for 15-20 minutes it is enough make our eyes painfull for days but now a days due to the improovement in contact lens it is not so dangerous. But if one keeps these lens for much time(sleep) this will affect not only eyes but also lens(they will tear or broke).

Do not sleep with your contact lenses in your eyes unless you are prescribed "Extended Wear" contacts! While the eyes are shut, tears cannot carry healthy amounts of oxygen to the eye, like during the waking hours. As a result, your contact lenses will become dry and stick to your eyes. If you accidentally do fall asleep with your contact lenses in, be sure to put eye drops in your eyes and wait a few minutes before trying to remove your contact lenses.

Yes definately you must avoid to sleep with lenses on. Doctors have given you an example but it does not mean that he recommends that you must wear it every night. Your own discomfort on next day is sufficient to know how painful the experience was. You must avoid wearing lenses for long hours. In a day ideally you can wear it for about 15hours.
If others have different view, suggestion invited.

It's bad to consistantly sleep with contacts in your eyes. Contacts themselves reduce the amount of oxygen getting to your eye. Sleeping with them in dramatically reduces the oxygen and moisture. Once in a while will be OK - just don't make a habit of it. I've worn contacts for over 10 years, and many times have fallen asleep in them. Don't leave them in for 3 days, make sure to take them out each night.

Dear Khatz,
Yes, It is not at all proffered to sleep with contacts
I have found this info
Sleep in your lenses if you have a cold, flu, sinusitis, gastroenteritis, fever, or are feeling generally unwell or rundown. If the illness is severe, all contact lens wear should be suspended. The lenses should be cleaned and stored in fresh disinfecting solution.
And in yahoo Health it is give
"Ideally, one should never sleep in contact lenses."
So, Better not to sleep with lens while sleeping - NOT AT ALL RECOMMENDED.

It will not "tear your retina" or "roll back out of reach" but as stated earlier, certain lenses are approved for extended wear so that you can sleep in them. But not everyone is able to sleep comfortably in their lenses and this seems to be the case for you.

It's not good. You must put your lences into a special substance during the night and you must pour two drops of I don't know the name of the medicine in USA in your eyes not to have problems.
The problems might apear because it's a strange object in your eyes.

I was in hospital for doing exactly that. I have sensitive skin and had been in a smoke filled room when it happened the fact that it irritated your eyes in one night, obviously means you are sensitive to the solution Id advise not leaving them in over night again

u should never wear contacts for more than 8 hrs
ur eyes need oxygen as well and with contacts on they are unable to get oxygen and therefore keep going worse.

I have contacts and I have fallen to sleep with them in before, i wouldnt recommend it. but my friend Amanda sleeps in hers, you need to put eye drops in before you go to sleep and when you wake up, but i would recommend takin them out (even if they are the kind that you can sleep in) because i mean your not looking at anything while your asleep, so why have them on? and it can be dangerous!
