Because, it's not only for physical pleasure alone, take it otherwise, it's a way to come closer to each other, to show each other you care, now a days, people don't have time even for themselves, however, through this method, two people come closer, resultant relationship works.

Sex serves a lot of purpuse for some just like eating is to some people or like shopping is or a number of other things. Try understanding the person not the act or situation. So the fact is no a relationship doesn't have to have sex to exist but for some sex does need to exist.
