That depends on whether your Active duty or Reserve/Gaurd.
I signed on as a reservist in 1998 and am still in. Only now I'm Inactive Ready Reserves....(i can get called up for active duty at any time) Basic training was the most fun I had as a teenager. I went to Ft. Leonard Wood MO in 1998. I was at BCT a total of 13 weeks that includes the first few at what was called 43rd AG. It's where you in process. You go through three phases of real BCT, Red also known as lockdown, White gets a lot easier, and finally Blue which is when you feel confident and have a lot of fun getting to know what BCT is really all about. After that depending on your MOS (military occupational specialty) and which months you end BCT in you will be shipped to a new training site. For Advanced Individual Training (AIT). I was fortunate enough to graduate BCT in Dec. around X-mas and got to take leave before going on to AIT in Gulfport, MS. The standards at Ait are harder, but more realization of what Army is all about comes into play here. You get a little more freedom to, that is if you've earned it. After graduation at Ait, comes the best part. You get your post and find out what Army life is all about... If your young and have no intentions of starting a family right away, i suggest signing up active duty and getting a four yr. contract. There are lots of sign up bonus' offered right now too. Don't wait too long cause the good jobs will be gone quick. Contact your local recruiter for more info, but don't let anyone push you into something your not too sure about. Remember they want you just as bad as you want to get in. Please think hard about why you want to join and good luck...hoped I helped you!

it depends on what you want from life?
Remember that there are plenty of jobs in the army and that not all of them require you to march around with a pack on your back.
Dont know what you want to do when you join the Army think of what job you want to do, if its not in make up there is a 95% chance that the army offers that job as well(the army has to be self sufficient), so why not get paid to train, keep fit and travel the world, sure the chances of dying is higher than normal, thats why you train hard so you can fight easy.
I have been in the army for a while now and wouldnt change it for the world.

Well I'm not in the army. I'm married into it though. What kind of job are you looking at going into? That's what you need to figure out first. You'll go to Iraq no doubt. My husband has been in for 5 years and has been deployed 3 times. Currently serving in Afghanistan! You'll probably deploy within the first year after bootcamp. If you really want to know you should do some research for blogs written by people currently deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, those are the people to ask!

no but I was in the Air Force. It was easy and a good experience. I knew some army guys since my base was next to an army base, they seemed miserable

It depends, I have been an infantry soldier (arguably one of the roughest jobs in the Service) most of my life and I love it. I was brought up in a family with a long tradition of military service going back to our origins in Russia. I grew up hiking, camping, and hunting, so it was only natural for me to join the military. I have to say though that it is definitely not for everyone, and I don't feel that those who do not join are any less proud Americans than I am. Only those commie liberals who have no idea what they are talking about and have no clue about the military, or how it operates should shut up and get out of my way.

I'm in the Army. I don't really care for it. It all depends on if you like that hooah hooah stuff. If you want to march for a few miles with 40 lbs on your back just for fun then it's just for you!
