Its not fair, the tax pays for schools that single dont have children to send to. I guess one of the benefits of having 10 children is to get 1500 deductible for living in a trailor in Mississippi and making 16k a year

Actually, if two married people have approximately equal incomes, they probably pay more than a single with the same income. If a married couple has only one income, or incomes are drastically different, they probably get a break.

Parts of the tax code are meant to encourage specific behavior. Ex. deductibility of mortgage interest is meant to encourage home ownership. Another example is the deductibility of charitable donations. The MFJ status, i believe, was meant to encourage marriage. Both home ownership and marriage are thought to contribute to a more stable society.

in general, the tax code is more favorable to singles. the only exception would be if your psouse had little to no income
