I will give 10 pts for the most detailed explanation of comparing between the brands, as well as the different effects.

Yes, I saw another poster mention the effects of dulling residue. I think rather than switching to a new brand all the time, try getting a deep cleansing shampoo that is specifically made to remove styling residue (Pantene makes a good one in a CLEAR bottle). Use it once a week instead of your regular shampoo.

Mane and Tail is great. It is actually made for horses, but works wonders if you have frizzy or coarse hair, but DON'T use it if your hair is thin or babyfine, as it will weight it down and make it limp and greasy, and the conditioner is THICK, so use it conservatively.

I use Pantene Brunette Expressions shampoo and conditioner. I color my hair, and it REALLY boosts the shine and multi-tonal quality, as well ans leaving my hair silky, smooth, and manageable without being weighted down, plus it smells awesome. They have a blonde expressions and a red expressions too, and even if your hair isn't colored, it boosts your color.

John Frieda makes a similar version called Brilliant Brunette or Brilliant Blonde....it's twice as exprensive and actually left my hair dull and weighted down. I MUCH prefer the Pantene.

One good product John Frieda makes though is Frizz-Ease serum....great for poofy or frizzy hair, regardless of the shampoo you use.

My friend uses this shampoo made by a brand that I believe is called Sunsilk or something like that? I know it has silk in the name, and they are advertising more on tv lately with the slogan "Get Hairapy." Anyway, she uses their anti-poof shampoo, and it has really tamed her former poodle coif!

I'd go with Pantene's Brunette/Blonde/Red Expressions shampoo and condtioner, with a Pantene deep cleansing shampoo (or if you want to go cheap use the one made by Suave called Daily Clarifying) once a week. Then if stray poofy hairs are still a problem, use a touch of Frizz-ease serum or a little bit of mousse worked through damp hair while you blow-dry on a cool setting. And remember, to avoid frizz and breakage, the rule is COMB WHEN WET, BRUSH WHEN DRY.

Hope this helps!

Pantene

I like Pantene and it is affordable and produces consistently good results. I don't like L'Oreal as it makes my hair frizzy, lank and it felt quite heavy to use, but that's just my experience, other people may find it has worked for them. The best advice I can give you is to try each shampoo and compare it to the others you have used, this can be expensive but worth it to find out which products suit you best. Use products designed for your hair type, for example mine is curly/wavy, so I use shampoos for curly hair. The best make I can recommend is Umberto Giannini, they do a range for straight hair as well and also styling products that work with the shampoo and conditioner, they smell great and are not too expensive. I can also recommend the Aussie products, I like the custard apple one, but I am sure they do shampoos for smooth and sleek hair, try them!

Pantene leaves my hair really soft and frizz-free, however a hairdresser once told me that contains a chemical which is actually bad for your hair in the long run. I use Aussie 3 Minute Miracle- it's brilliant for dry, brittle hair.

people like pantene because after you shampoo, it doesnt dry out your hair that much...but the truth is, pantene has a lot of grease in the shampoo and conditioner, thats why the hair looks silky or whatever but its actually a grease covered on your hair and it is not healthy at all. the grease makes your hair not be able to breath. the pantene conditioner makes build-ups on your scalp.

i dont know about loreal. but as a cosmetologist, i dont recommend you to use those shampoo you can buy at regular drug stores. if you wanna have healthy and good looking hair, go to beauty supply store and spend some extra money on your hair products.
i totally recommend JOYCO. their K-PAK line is excellent. shampoo removes all the dirt and build ups, then use their reconstructor and hydrator. they will make your hair healthy and silky looking =)
remember, shampoo is not supposed to make your hair shiny. it is supposed to open up the cuticles to remove the dirts and built-ups on your hair and scalp. you always have to use conditioner after you shampoo to close the cuticles and add some moisture into your hair. if you shampoo your hair and not use conditioner, it will looki very frizzy since the cuticle is wide opened....
if you have colored hair, use color care shampoo and conditioner from joyco.

other recommended line is...
paul mitchell (only TEA-TREE line)
redken (only their color care line)

at the moment I'm using thermosilk....i change brand every time i need a replacement. shampoo builds up on your hair.
ever notice how when you first get a "new" kind of shampoo your hair feels awesome..smooth, soft, feels light and bouncy and great! then after awhile it start to be gross again...even though your still using that "new shampoo"..that's build up.
the only way to fix that is to constantly change your brand each time you buy replacements. it cleans out the old crap.
it doesn't have to be expensive..but its your choice. you can always use a fav brand again later on too. i have two favs..thermosilk, and garnier fructis.
you could also keep two brands in the shower at all times....that way you could switch between brands at every washing..that might help with excessive build up.
i also give myself hot oil treatments every 6 weeks. that helps prevent breakage and keeps your hair soft and shiny.

L'OReal Professional. It's perfect for my hair, I use intense Repair and shine, my hair is soft, clean, shiney and sleek. It has a cashmere touch and is light reflecting. And i love it.
