Different doctors may use different patching methods to acheive the same endpoint. The doctor that prescribed the patching should have given you a schedule of patching and this schedule should be followed strictly to help force your child's eye to work properly.

Which doctor put on the patch or prescribed the patch? Why would you have gotten several different prognoses? The doctor who administered the patch would be the person whose opinion would determine the amount of time the patch is in place.
