The grass is always greener elsewhere :) I'm not too crazy about my hometown either (in the Netherlands), I think because home is also work/school/housework etc. It's so much different when you go to a city as a tourist, you're on a holiday, no obligations, just doing whatever you like!

I've visited several European capital cities (Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Rome, Luxembourg and Dublin) and I must say that Dublin is high on my list of favourites. I've seen some of the less touristic areas, but nevertheless I liked the 'vibe' of the city. Some places you instantly love and other places you instantly hate, for me, Dublin was the first option :)

I liked Dublin when I visited. You're right though, there are rubbish areas in every city. They only take the tourists down the nice bits in any tourist city. I think people don't always like where the live or grew up. I feel the same way about my home town. The council keep plugging it as wonderful and I can't stand the place! I think it is only natural to feel that way. I remember saying to my friend when we were in Dublin that we have travelled so far to go to Dublin, but if we lived there we wouldn't bother going to the tourist attractions. It is always the case.

Dublin is a fantastic city. As long as you get outside the Temple Bar area (which totally doesn't count as Dublin because you'll find more Americans or British hen parties there).

People who think Dublin is a good city think so because of the craic. There are many pubs and its the home of Guinness. I however, having lived there a while, think it is very overrated! Congested streets and dirty on the whole. I can think of a dozen cities i would rather visit!

but they will probably never go to your area, it's the same in any city, theres always the bad bits. If they had enough guiness, they might love your area!

I guess the binge drinkers think it's going abroad but the locals don't behave like foreigners!
