My hair's about as long and as thick as his but it won't hand the way his does. Mine tends to part in one distinct line and hang in one big chunk.

Your hair is probably not used to being parted the way his is. You have to leave it that way for maybe a week or few days so that your hair will get use to staying that way. Also it is best to part your hair the way his is right after a shower when your hair is still wet. Then if you need to layer your hair a bit I would suggest using a layering scissor. That always works best. Good Luck!

Hi, I got my hair layered on saturday and I have really thick hair. It was hard to manage and took forever to dry. When they put layers in your hair, it actually makes the hair abit thinner and takes alot of the weight away. You can even ask them to think it out some more if its still to thick after its been layered. My hair now feels great, its like half the weight and a lot easier to style etc. :)

my hair isn't that long, i had it cut, but it used to by longer than that. Ok, you get your hair wet, and use a comb to part your hair like that. Then put it in a ponytail down your back until it's dry. NOT a ponytail on top of your head. A loose one, hanging down your back. I hope i got this right, i haven't done it in a long time. good luck, dude
