No make up is not bad for the skin, in general. Be careful what products you buy as some can be worse and give you a bad complexion.
The foundation you use is a pretty good on. I use MAC and it lets my skin breathe and moisturises with an SPF. Some make up can even help your skin.
As long as you take your make up off properly (eye make up, cleanse, tone etc) then it should be fine and continue using nice make up!
Cheaper brands generally are not as nice or help the skin.

also cleanser does not dry out your skin in general. I use clarins and it has helped my skin to be softer. Also, try using a primor like MAC as it helps keep your make up on so you dont need to wear as much.
It is fine for you to wear make up

foundation is bad for the skin, actually yes it stops your skin from breathing... pores are too small and would be filled by the foundation. some types of foundation are better than others although they all harm your skin... try not to use foundation much, powder is not as good alternative for everyday use... keep the foundation for a date or a nice dinner out!
however, if you'll keep using foundation keep using YSL it is one of the bests!

The first step to answering the question is to find out what "foundation" actually is, what ingredients it contains.
This site has some questionable opinions on the ingredients but seems to cover most of what is in "foundation".

After knowing what constituent chemicals are in a product. We could then do research to find out what effect these chemicals might have to your skin.
From my experience as a retailer of skin care products, I can tell you:
Foundations generally contains waxes and talcs and clays
These things tend to clog pores
Foundations also frequently contain chemical preservatives, and other chemicals
My answer would have to be; Yes, many foundations stiffle your skin from getting sufficient air, almost all of them. Could one be better than another? Yes. You would have to compare ingredients to know which is better.
I would suggest that a few letters from eloquent customers might inspire the cosmetics industry to focus on more "breathable" make-up.

Make up can clog pores, causing imperfections.
If you don't have bad skin, don't wear make up! There are a lot of women who would love to have blemish free skin so that they don't need to wear foundation! ;)
I find foundation that contains SPF causes more blemishes on my skin, compared to foundation that does not have SPF.
Clean your face with a good quality face wash. Do not use cleanser, as this will dry your skin. Use a gel-like, grease free moisturiser (Clinique is good).
In regard to cheap vs. expensive - I find no difference.

The trick is to make sure that you cleanse your skin, and apply moisturiser regularly (and a facial now and then)
Then you can wear any foundation.
If you have good skin, perhaps you don't need to wear foundation?

Depends on your skin condition. If you have smooth skin, why use make-up? If you have blemishes to hide, definitely use make-up. Going natural is the way to go. Your real beauty shines without make-up. :)
