I've studied Leonardo da Vinci for some time now and I've been lucky enough to actually handle some of his work. An important thing to remember with regard to Leonardo is that his religious paintings were not very traditional. He was a bit of a maverick. Look at Ghirlando's Last Supper and comepare it to Leonardo's. Ghirlando's sitters have very little expression and are painted in a traditional style. Leonardo's are caught in the act of shock and surprise when Jesus asks, 'Which one of you will betray me?'. As for the knive, it's simply a gesture. There are other knives on the table and in this case, one is being held by an apostle. Remember, Leonardo often did things just for laughs. He was very irreverent!!
Please don't take Dan Brown too seriously he's only a fiction writer.

If you need more help please don't hesitate to ask.
