I couldn't agree with you more. I hate that the english language has been so bastardized by the internet. The only thing that I hate more is Star Jones.

There is absolutely nothing cool about using improper English. That includes grammar, spelling and punctuation, as well as pronunciation. The really annoying thing about the pronunciation is that it totally confuses people who have to lip read. I find it more than just annoying when some of the English grammar abuses make it very difficult to figure out what people are talking about!

First, a quote for you:
"Most people who bother with the matter at all would admit that the English language is in a bad way, but it is generally assumed that we
cannot by conscious action do anything about it. Our civilization is decadent, and our language--so the argument runs--must inevitably share in the general collapse. It follows that any struggle against the abuse of language is a sentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aeroplanes."
Second, while I share the same view I also place the blame as to why it is so- my opinion is that the bad language is largely influenced by this hip-hop bullshit that has flooded the music industry and infected society. Notice that it's now cool not only to speak as if you needed to get hooked on phonics or something, but cool as well to wear clothing that doesn't fit as if you were homeless and cool to let your hair nap out like a mangy dog. Curious coincidence that all of this bears a resemblance to rap and hip-hop music videos which seems to be extremely popular with the younger generation today.
But that's just my opinion...

Well, it's not cool but it's more casual than proper English(sometimes but it still depends on that person). I use both. Depend on who I'm talking to and what kind of situation/place I'm in. In more informal place, I tend to mix both of them. But yah, overused improper English IS annoying especially when you can't understand a thing what the other person is talking about!

There is nothing wrong with the use of slang in casual conversation. In fact, I am glad it exists. It incorporates flare, culture, and creativity into conversations that would otherwise lack it. Who wants cookie-cutterness? I don't. I truly love and appreciate diversity. Some people really need to open their minds and get off their elitist, bigoted bullshit. Maybe you haven't been around the block, but there are REAL people who use Southern/African-American vernacular because it is their culture. I live in a black, middle-class, suburban area of Kansas City, so I know this firsthand.
However, if you are specifically annoyed by the types of people whose use of pop-culture/hip hop-derived slang is very contrived yet taken very seriously, I feel you. They are annoying. I'm not fond of suburbanites or suburban, cookie-cutter culture.

I can't believe most of you people actually believe what it is your saying. Did you ever hear of slang people? I mean we sometimes write dat instead of that because it's shorter and it's not like these people don't know any english so don't resort to calling everyone who uses slang as brainless idiots who can't even comprehend the english language because you sound like assholes.
I think alot of responses here are just plain idiotic. Learn to deal with the slang or just don't say anything because what you'll say won't be appreciated.

Language has been made to be modified.
English is a very vague language compared to other languages like Spanish.
English spoken in the U.S. is not as well spoken in the U.K.
It is normal for a language to accept changes depending on the culture of the people who speak it.

They take language for granted? The fact that even if they put 'dat' and 'dis', there are people out there who still 'get' them and understand what they're saying.
For me, language has always been about communication. As long as I 'get' what the speaker/writer is saying, then we're cool.

I think the humor of it is directly proportional to the intelligence of the person. A intelligent person whipping out an occasional Eddie Murphy "Watsupwitdat!" Pure comedy. High school dropouts that only use it because its the only way they know how to talk. Still comedy, but in a watching the skateboarder crack his melon on the stairs sort of way.

It's NOT cool, period. They appear as if they have the brain capacity, and attention span of a dead chipmunk when they talk like that. Not only is their spelling atrocious, but they lack the common sense to simply click a spell check button. This is sad.
