Why do we tip waiters but not plumbers?
Pizza delivery guys but not mail men?
Barbers but not auto mechanics?

You can't say it's because waiters don't make much. There are lots of people that don't make much, besides employers are required to make up the difference between what they make and minimum wage...so they make AT LEAST minimum wage.

why has 10% moved to 15% and now 20%

Why do most people tip even if the service was below average?

You shouldn't have to tip out of fear (otherwise shouldn't we tip our doctors so that he diagnoses us correctly)?

Why is it called a "gratuity" but waiters expect it or restaurants include it?

And finally, if you think the system sucks, but you tip anyway...why do you do so?

Does anyone else think the practice is completly out of hand???

I agree, sometimes I tip the guy at the gas station who wipes my windows or the kid at the grocery store who helps me out with an ice cold Coke. They don't really see it comin and on a hot day they really love it.

If all a wait person did was prevent me from going back and getting the food myself they get nothing. In fact I always carry cash so if the service is especially inattentive and poor, I leave a little less so they have to cover the rest of my bill. I know i'm sneaky like that.

I don't tip if the service sucks. But, I've never heard that the employers are required to make up the difference, how would they know how much they made in tips?

How much do you think plumbers, mailmen, and auto mechanics make an hour. Where I live between at least $15 - $50 and hour.

How much do waiters, waitresses, and bartenders make? $2.14 an hour. I'd say that's a major difference. Even with tips they don't make near as much as the aboved mentioned. I thought like you for many years until I found out how much they really made. I also understand that they have to pay taxes on estimated tips whether they got tips or not.

I do agree you should tip what you want and not be expected to pay a certain amount. But, unless you had really crappy service is it just rude not to tip your server.

If we didn't tip, the services would cost more. Waitresses and pizza delivery people make very little money. They do not make minimum wage. If we didn't tip, their employers would have to pay them more; and pass it along to us. This way you have a choice, instead iof paying higher enforced prices.

You are very ignorant. People in service industries don't have guaranteed salaries and benefits.

Service was below average? How often?;not very often. And comes with the customer.

You are very ignorant.

Basically its to supplement their wages - if you have ever worked in hospitality, it is greatly appreciated and makes the work just that little more rewarding!

I am from australia - and its not compulsary here, so it is that much more appreciated.
