Depersonalization/disassociation is usually a response to severe abuse. It is also believed to in some cases lead to disassociative identity disorder (a.k.a. multiple personality disorder). If you are experiencing disassociation you should seek therapy immediately.

Yeah, I have had this...I had something very traumatic to myself about ten years ago when I am 16, I was raped and I disassociated allot and even though I have life, I am married to a great guy, have a son, if there is something I have a hard time dealing with I can "shut down" or blank out...kinda like on stand by or something...it's like I know I am physically here, but not at the same time

I have done that many times. It does feel like dying, but it is a very peaceful feeling. I remember flying to lots of places and seeing lots of loved ones...I really didn't want to come back to my body because it was so peaceful...I also remember it being a bit like riding a bicycle the first time, a little wobbly when trying to fly...lol...relax and enjoy...it can be lots of fun...I think we all need to excape this world from time to time in order to keep our sanity..Best of luck...

I've had these symptoms, and have read a bit about them. I understand that if it's for reasons of escapism, it can be a kind of disassociation pattern. When it is difficult to escape, but we have no ability to escape, we use our mind to create an alternate reality. Mostly because this reality isn't safe.
