Some people do not even understand their own religion. They go by what they hear and most of the time it gets all mixed up. I'm sure you are not the only person that thinks that. A lot of people will use excuses for anything though. I think sometimes when people do no know their own religion it gives being religious a bad reputation.

We're all just crazy.
People will use anything as a scapegoat, religions are easy because for the most part, they're based on an invisible/unexperiencable persona.

Excellent question.
People do often use religion as a scapegoat or as an excuse... but this is true of many other excuses people use to excuse away their evil actions...
However the fact that some people use religion as an excuse does not mean that Religion in general (or Christianity in particular) is wrong.
I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ.
If interested, for a draft-version of my journey from atheism to Christ, see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html
And, for scientific and intellectual evidence for the existence of God, see http://www.godsci.org/gs/godsci/evidence.htm
Cordially,
John

People use it as a scapegoat. They do not want to face up to their actions. These are the same kind of people that will say they have never done anything wrong. If used correctly, religion can have a profound impact on someone's life. It can give them a purpose, a reason for living their life. It can ease them when they are in pain, and they can rejoice in it when they are happy.

No, you're not alone. It only takes a few zealots who claim to know God's thoughts to turn me away from any religion.
I have no respect for people who hide atrocious behavior behind their piety. What I do admire are those who have a relationship with God daily and live out their beliefs in the smallest of ways with all of God's creation.
Crazy or not, it takes courage, honesty and humility to admit our faults. Plus faith to ask forgiveness. No one is perfect, and what a relief. Think how insufferable they would be!

Finally! Someone else who feels like I do. :)
I think a lot of people use religion as a crutch and I think that's really sad. You should take responsibility for what happens in your life - not praise or blame someone else.
