Bowling! We recently did this for my son's eighth, but we had ages from 5 - 50, and had a ball (ha ha, sorry--that WAS an accidental pun!) Really--I wouldn't have thought, but it was great. Don't know where you are, but here there are some alley's that will cater a party. Good luck.:)

I would definitly have one that is for all ages, barbeques are great for that, they set a relaxing atmosphere, have some games for kids, have a photo album out of your dads favorite people, have a vido cam and talk to guests, ask them to say something about him and give it to him as a cherished gift. You can also ask guests to bring a dish from each catagory on the menu, meat, side dish and desert and have dad judge the best from each catagory, or just make all his favorites yourself with the help of family members and other loved ones. You can also go on the net and get other party ideas for themes and fun stuff to do.

A trip to the zoo with a picnic lunch would be nice or maybe an outing to an amusement park.
You could pack up some games to play and a picnic lunch and go to a local park or somewhere by the water if it is going to be hot.
These are a few ideas of things that I have done.
Good luck
Hope.

A costume party.

They're incredible but make sure you plan a theme that he'll find exciting.

For example:

* if you know his favorite movie then EVERYONE should attend dressed as one character from that movie. Television shows and sports teams are also great ideas along this line. If you know his favorite director (like the guy who did Kill Bill) or if you know his favorite movie series (James Bond), requiring everyone to dress like one is much easier because you have collectively hundreds of different people you could portray.

* having people dress from the year he was born may be fun for him (but make sure you have the music that's appropriate for that era).

* has he ever expressed interest in vacationing somewhere else? My mother said she always wanted to visit Ireland so I bought some Irish music, made some Irish food, and made everyone wear Irish clothing from different areas. We even held contests for best Irish accent, best Irish food (everyone brought their own), and best Irish costume.

You could have a good ole sock hop. Play 50's music and dance, dance, dance, oh yeah, don't forget to fix him a super RootBeer Float. Make sure all the females can chew bubble gum and talk at the same time too.
