If its just anger, there really isn't a medication that will treat that. Anger is often behaviorally and cognitively based, not usually organic or biological. If the doctor does prescribe you something, you always have the option to refuse it and request something else, like therapy or anger management.

Joy just gave you the answer. I just want to add.... You could benefit from counseling to find the root of the anger. And you can learn to direct your anger. Sometimes you need to ventilate, I do. Buy some old plates at a thrift store or flea market and smash them once in awhile. That way you can express your anger without anyone getting hurt. Cognitive therapy. Recovery, Inc. is a good support group- they teach you tools to use to reduce the symptoms (in your case anger).

If your doctor gives you medication, don't rely on it to be a cure. As far as I know, the only things he may prescribe for anger would be more like a crutch.... something to support you while you work on issues in therapy.

There are many meds he or she can prescribe you. But I think the meds can be narrowed down to the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibiters (SSRIs). These are common anti-depressents. The examples are, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, etc.

They use the brain chemical called "serotonin" to calm you down. Serotonin is a chemical that controlls one's daily mood, ability to sleep, appetite, etc.

But remember, the real way to solve the anger issue is not by just taking meds which is designed to calm you down, but by investigating the source of the anger (tramatic early childhood experiences, parental issues, etc.).

But at the same time, there is a strong likelyhood of the docter does not tell you to take meds, but solve the problem by counseling.

Personally, I oppose taking such meds above, because they have notourius facts of giving disturbing physical side effects (ex: dehydration, dry mouth, strong sexual side effects, profound change in lifestyle, inability to feel the negative emotions, and alas, some suicides are reported as the side effects.)

I recommed you solving problems by verbal therapy, counseling.

Or, I would recommed you seeing a "homeopathy" docter, because I experienced myself that the homeopathy DOES work well, just like the chemical western meds. At the same time, the homeopathy does not give any harmful side effects like the chemicals.

The homeopathy actually cures the source of the mental problem, rather then just handling the "symptoms", which the chemical anti-depressents do.

One more advice I want to give you;dealing with mental issues, your future is depended on you. If you decide you can be mentally healthy person, then you do not need medications.

I need to talk to someone about my anger issues too. Mines are really bad. Sometimes I'll take a bat and just walk down the street and hit people's cars and mailboxes

I didn't know there were medicines for anger . . anyway, if I were you, I wouldn't agree to take medicine . . these are issues from inside you and it would be best to try and resolve why you're feeeling so angry (I sure you have an excellent reason) . . but once you identify the cause of your anger your behavior will be modified pretty much by itself . . don't be afraid of getting to the bottom of it . . . good luck

You should probably just go to anger management classes. Why would you want to let meds try to fix your problem?
