Listen I have had two kids and totally understand my weight totally blew out and I knew it was time to do something after I had my second child.

Committment, dedication and total change of behaviour, it's a big ask and people don't understsand that it is really hard but once you are in the zone you can do this.

If you want to do this it is for life so you need to totally change your way of eating and exercising. This is not a diet rather than a healthy eating plan for life. So no more talking diet cause it means time limit. Stop making some major mistakes wake up earlier and get active earlier your metabolism is sluggish and needs to be woken up this is half your problem.

Here are the golden rules:
Initially cut down to 1200 calories.
Exercise 6 times per week for 1 hours a day. Do three weight sessions and three cardio sessions. No gym involved.
Don't eat carbs after 4pm, never eat carbs within 2 hours of exercise or within 1 hour of exercise.
Drink 3 litres of water per day. You can have a green tea at the end of the day.
Limit your fruit in take to 2 pieces per day.
Never eat dinner after 6pm.
Adopt of low GI eating plan this is sustainable for life!
Make low fat dairy choices

Follow this menu plan as a suggestion:
Breakfast 7am - 1 cup hot water w lemon
20 minutes later have a bowel of oats w water (no honey) OR
fruit salad w low GI soy yogurt
Snack 10am - pear or apple (both low GI)
Lunch 12.30pm - multigrain sandwich w 50g tuna & salad (no butter)
Snack 3pm - low GI yogurt OR skim berry smoothie (no honey or banana) plenty of ice, 1/2 cup skim milk & 1/4 cup yogurt
Dinner 5.30pm - 120g grilled lean meat/fish/prawns/tofu patties (not fried) w spinach salad & mixed vegies (no whites, carbs) OR 3 egg white/soy omlette with ham, cheese and tomato
Snack - 1 scoop of low cal low fat ice cream (if hungry)

Exercise is must be intense. Refer to www.bodybuilding.com for your weights routine. Never do weights two consecutive days have a cardio day in between.

Cardio needs to include running, go hard up stair wells and cycling. You get the most benefits from exercise when your body is totally fatigued and this is when you see changes.

To maintain you can increase calories to 1500 and reduce exercise sessions to 3-4 times per week. If weight creeps up again due to holiday period etc.. go back to 1200 cal and 6 sessions again.

Good luck it worked for me it can work for anyone.

I sympathize with not liking yourself because of weight - I felt the same way too. Just a week ago I started the South Beach Diet, and I am losing weight steadily, and I feel better in general. I highly, highly, recommend it. The book is probably available in your local library, so you don't have to spend any money on it. Once you read the book and understand the main idea, the diet is easy to follow -- no weighing, measuring, etc. In fact, the author of the book emphasizes that the purpose of the book is not to limit what you eat, but just to change the kinds of things you eat. This works well for me because I am a person who is almost always hungry.

Please know that you are not alone. There are many others in your same situation. If you are lonely, that can make the dieting process even harder - see if there is some community support or just a few friends you could go walking with every now and then. I know it must be hard to juggle weight loss and raising a four-year-old, but all things are possible. Keep trying! You will find success.

Have you tried Nutri-System? It worked for me 14 years ago, and I'm going to do it again. I was 140 when I met my husband, and 180 when I got married. I have no idea what I weigh now, but I'm probably about 230 lbs. or more. Also, you can get an exercise ball and work out on that. They don't cost much; if there is a Burlington Coat Factory near where you live, you can get one there. That's where I got mine. Get some small weights, about 1 lb. or 5 lbs., whatever you can pick up comfortably. Remember, when losing weight, do it for yourself, not for anyone else. Try to lose 1 or 2 pounds a week, get with your doctor, start slow and keep a positive attitude. Good luck!

P.S.: 230 lbs. is not severely obese, even at 5'1" tall!! :)

Good for you, to recognize your problem. If you've been eating healthy for the past four years, then you've made a good stasrt. Diet pills aren't going to do much for you. The problem with taking diet pills, aside from the fact that they are expensive, is that they don't help you change your eating habits. Once you stop taking the pills, you go right back to where you were before.
Now that your daughter is a toddler, and you aren't breast feeding, you can re-examine your diet. A healthy calorie intake for a reducing diet, is about 1200 to 1500 calories per day, depending on how active you are.
The secret to losing weight and keeping it off, is to fool your body. Take it off very slowly. A pound a week is great -- that's 50 pounds a year, and in two years you'll be almost back to your pre-pregnancy weight. I know, you're groaning right now and saying, "TWO YEARS!" But here's the reason.
If you lose weight quickly, your body thinks there's some sort of disaster going on - that it's famine time. And to conserve your energy, and your fat reserves, which your body thinks is the only way it can get through this crisis, it slows down your metabolism and operates very, very efficiently. Which means you aren't going to lose weight at all, even though you end up on a very meagre diet, which can have really bad effects on your health.
When you lose weight gradually, your body says, "Oh. That's okay. I'll keep an eye on the situation, but I don't have to go into panic mode yet." Your metabolism remains the same, and your nutrition is sound, so you don't deplete your bones by draining calcium from them, or any of those other horrible side effects that happen when your body is undernourished.
Along with this, you're going to need to do a good half hour of exercise every day. Rain or shine. It doesn't have to cost money -- a good, brisk walk for half an hour will do the trick.
And as for hating yourself -- you shouldn't. You're a pretty smart lady to realize that it's time to take yourself in hand and get back on track. You should be proud of the fact that you can recognize that. And then you asked for help, to get advice on how best to achieve your aim. That all sounds pretty good to me!
So instead of being hard on yourself, give yourself a pat on the back, talk with a dietician (your public health centre will help you there) and set out a workable plan for yourself.
And the nice thing is, two years from now, when your daughter starts school, you'll be proud of how you look when you walk her up to school, meet her teacher, and get involved in parent-teacher association activities. And your daughter will be proud of how her mom looks.
Go for it girl!

I recently gave birth to my daughter (7 mos ago) my pre preg weight was 140, my peak weight during pregnancy was 196, and I am now down to 154.
What i did & am still doing is eating 3 meals a day plus 3 snacks. I limit my intake of carbs & sugars as that what creates energy & if you dont burn it turns to fat.
I exercise and walk on a daily basis. ( Denise Austin in the am on the Lifetime ch. has a decent workout M-F) & I just stay active. I play hide and go seek with neighborhood kids, go swimming, hiking, fishing, whatever keeps me off the couch & doesn't cost any money.
BE SURE TO EAT LIGHT AT NIGHT! Especially if you are not planning on exercising much.

Don't despair if it doesn't come off quickly, just keep at it & your self-esteem will improve because exercising is a natural cure for depression. Don't be so hard on yourself. Just work hard, stay with a diet and exercise plan that works for you. AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER! At least 8 glasses a day....oh AND CUT ALL SODA FROM YOUR DIET!!!

Over two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese. That’s quite a high percentage of adults who have a need to shed a little or a lot of fat! The only way to do this is one pound at a time!

Many overweight individuals wish and hope for a quick cure to their weight problems. They’ll try anything that promises instant results! Unfortunately, these ‘miracle weight loss’ products are scams! They may help a person shed some water weight, initially. But, the fat isn’t going anywhere without a little effort on that person’s part!

For those of you who have tried weight loss diets or are thinking about trying one, consider all the dieters who have tried the same diets and failed. The number one reason for permanent weight loss failure is the inability to stick with the diet!

Many individuals become ‘yo-yo’ dieters. They try one diet for awhile, lose a few pounds, quit the diet, gain back the weight (and then some), and move on to another diet. The process is repeated. With each new attempt, there is often more weight to lose than there was initially!
Successful Weight Loss Strategies
If you want to lose weight successfully, you must realize, first, that there are no miracle diets or products that will blast away the fat! You didn’t gain the weight overnight! You aren’t going to lose it overnight, either! You will have to put forth effort to lose the fat, one pound at a time! Even after you’ve shed those extra pounds, you will have to continue to work at controlling your weight, if you wish to keep the fat off!

In an article on Consumer Reports.org which rates various popular diets, Cathy Nonas, R.D., M.S., (an obesity researcher at North General Hospital in New York) states, “The best diet is the one you can stay on.” Consumer Reports goes on to say that “adherence is important…To maintain lost weight, dieters must permanently reduce their calorie intake, because they will need fewer calories to fuel their now-smaller body.”

Fad diets typically fail in the end. From my own personal experience, I have found that eating sensibly works best! If you want to lose weight (one pound at a time), keep it off, and feel good, too, why not try cutting down on the empty calories found in most American diets? Eat more raw vegetables and fruits and whole grains. Go easy on the fats and processed sugary or salty snacks. Limit yourself to smaller portions and avoid having second helpings. This type of diet is one that you CAN stick with and live with for the rest of your life!

Yes, you’ll have to make a few lifestyle changes, and you’ll have to work on being more disciplined in your eating habits. But, in the end, it will be worth it! You’ll look better! You’ll feel better! Your confidence will return, and you’ll believe that there isn’t anything that you cannot do!

Wouldn’t it be worth giving up that 44-ounce Coke and that huge order of greasy French fries for a healthier, happier you? If you simply can’t do without a few French fries and a Coke now and then, go ahead and treat yourself to a small serving. Cut back on calories somewhere else that day. Occasionally, it’s okay to indulge. But, if you seriously want to shed the extra fat and keep it off, be conscious about everything you put into your mouth. You’ll lose that weight, a pound at a time!

Ok, so only drink water (for budget reasons) - make sure you eat a minimum of 3 times a day - use skim milk and cereal - a sandwich on wheat bread for lunch and salad with beans for dinner - have some cheese and nuts for snacks throughout the day - frozen veggies are cheaper than fresh - bread and cereal can last a week - plus when you break it down it's much cheaper than eating out and you will feel better when you notice the results. Good luck and keep smiling (that helps too)

The good news is, you don't need to spend extra money to loose weight. All you need to do is to change your eating habits, exercise helps as well. You don't even need to spend any money on exercise, you can start by walking every day at least for 30 minutes.

It is hard to make a recommendation not knowing your current nutrition, but if you don't eat breakfast, eat foods high in refined sugar (simple carbs), don't eat enough protein and don't exercise then this is your starting point.

Eat breakfast. The breakfast is your most important meal of a day. Gradually stop eating food products with simple carbs in them. What this means is that you should be getting all your carbs from fruits and vegetables. I know it could be hard, but you don't need to be perfect with your diet 100% of the time. Designate 1 day in a week as a cheat day when you get to eat anything you want, but only if you did well on 6 other days in a week.

Eat around 1 gram of protein for your body weight. If your weight is 230lbs it means you should be eating 230 grams of protein. A little less is okay, you can go as low as 190 grams. Only choose healthy protein sources like fish (fatty fish), lean cuts of red meat (no visible fat), chicken without skin, turkey (without skin), eggs.

When you eat your protein make sure to add vegetables (the more the better), but stay away from potatoes. Don't forget about fruits as well. Take it easy with bananas and oranges and try to focus on berries (all variety). Gradually lower your carbohydrate consumption to around 150 grams a day (there is no hard number), but it could be your target. Except for your cheat day make sure to get all of those 150 grams of carbs from fruits and vegetables.

Try to eat 5 to 6 meals a day instead of 3 times, 4 hours between the meals. It doesn't mean you need to eat more food. You'll eat the same amount, but you split your meals into smaller portions. It will help to keep your metabolism up and could help you control your hunger.

It involves eating 6 times a day to speed up you metabolism, drinking 100ozs of water a day and cutting out the salt. Go to www.provida.com and go to the forums. It really does work.

Look at what you eat during the day - can you switch some things to lower calorie equivalents?

Pay attention to the portion sizes of the things you eat too. If you look at the nutrition facts on the sides of things, most are for more than 1 serving.

Cut down on the amount of goodies or treats you give yourself.

Increase exercise - even things like walking, alternate between light to moderate to brisk walking for increased amounts of time.

Plateaus will happen. Don't get discouraged when the number on the scale hasn't changed. It will. Notice the new you and be proud of how much you have accomplished.
