First of all, anything can become a "religion". Look it up in the dictionary. People are religious about football!
What we are missing is the TRUTH, because of religiosity, tradition and dogma. One of the things Jesus was indignant about was the "religiousity" of the Pharisees and Sadducees (the ruling members of Judaism at the time).
There is a vast difference between "Christianity" and "churchianity".

While it is easy to miss the point of religion because of tradition and dogma, I don't feel that it is necessary. Personally I like the structure that traditions give me. It is comforting and provides a sense of consistency. An eclectic path does not work for me because I become complacent too easily and I enjoy the company of others who share practices and beliefs in common with me. When I am with a group where everyone just "does their own thing" I feel a bit lonely and I miss the feeling of connection with others. So even if it were possible to eliminate all tradition and dogma, some of us may still miss the point. Isn't one of the main differences between spirituality and religion tradition and dogma? So no, I don't think it would be "religion" without it.

Without the traditions and dogma religion would be science and the world would be a much better place. Most religion started in order to explain things that people otherwise didn't understand. As science has become more and more able to dispel the incorrect traditions of religion, the need for religion has become weaker. We simply have fewer unanswered questions about the world and the universe than we did in the past. I will grant that there are lots of good things about religion as far as morals and being kind to others etc, but taken the wrong way and these values can lead to hatred and intolerance.

Dogmas in the Catholic church are based on the original teachngs of Jesus and the apostles, and on the bible (BUT NOT THE BIBLE ALONE) and on the authority God personally gave to his church (and only his church).
Without dogmas there can be no specific definition of truth.
Without truth, there is chaos.
Lot's of people either don't know how to find the truth, or are too lazy to do the work necessary to find it, so they conveniently choose to believe the lies of false teachers.
Lot's of people make up their own (false) truth, too.
No wonder the devil has such an easy time ruining souls!

People can get to used to the traditions and ceremonies. They can forget what the real purpose is. Infant baptism is one example. The bible says we are to "repent and be baptised". But how can a baby repent? Instead they are baptised in a way that is not really a baptism at all. They grow up thinking that they have been baptised, when they have not been. Thanking God for your newborn is a beautiful idea, but it should not be called baptism.

As a christian i can see how you can miss the true sense of religion depending on your church.I believe that true religion is walking and talking to God each day.He loves us so much that he would allow himself to be sacrificed for us.Don't let tradition ruin a relationship with God.Its our choice, get your bible out.
