you probably have a CODEC problem. The file has been compressed with a Encoder that is not available for free from Microsoft. Ones like DIVX will require a download from DIVX.com. It comes with a Video Player that is better at telling you what is wrong with a file. Other CODECs are available by searching the net. Some really old CODECs are not XP compatible, so you will be out of luck viewing them on XP and WMA10.

Ok
However it should be noted some media players like WMP11 wont play fragmented or not whole files of avi's they must be complete and indexed properly before they will be played back at all.
Try a couple of other players that are free and work great like:
WinAmp http://www.winamp.com/
JetAudio http://www.jetaudio.com/
VLCMediaPlayer http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
I would go with JetAudio since it is stable and plays fractured avi's so that you may preview them if needed before fully downloading them, or if you are just anxious to view the file. lol

Not all 'avi' file formats are compatible with all players. If you're having difficulty viewing it with Windows...since this is the player it's designed for...I'd say that there's probably something wrong with your file. Perhaps you can get a fresh download?

.AVI is a type of compression, you have to uncompress it first, I'm not sure on the program you need, but I know its a compressed file, so find a way to uncompress it, hope this helps a little.
