OK well I saw that marines are psycho in one of those answers and to that I just have to say Until you live with one you have no clue. All Joking aside, most of the answers are right on. Though the Marine Corps is now a stand alone department they did start out as a department of the Navy. Marines are the toughest of the tough they go through the hardest boot camps and many say see the worst part of combat. I was told once by a recruiter that if you were sane going into Marine Corps Basic Training that you would come out crazy and if you were crazy going in you would not make it out. Once you get used to marines you can tell one just by looking at them they are taught an arrogance and pride that I have not ever seen another service member have.
I am partial to Marines but that is due to the one who is, as I type in the other room sleeping. You should find a Marine be he former or present and set down with him and have a talk ask him what a Marine is you will have an entirely new respect for them.

I was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy and served for over 20 years and absolutely loved the Navy. That being said, I will say there is NO finer fighting force on the Earth than the United States Marine Corps. While the Navy and the Marines have always had a history of goodhearted teasing back and forth, I can honestly say that from a Navy point of view, the Marines are our brothers. I have so many friends that are Marines, and did have when I was on active duty. I lost six good friends in the Marine Barracks Bombing in Beirut on October 23, 1983 and two more with the First Marine Expeditionary Force in Kuwait City during the Persian Gulf War. To this very day, I can't listen to Taps being played without thinking of them.
Marines are a tough bunch, but you can't help but respect and admire them; and once you earn their respect they are your friends for life. I think their motto says it all - "SEMPER FIDELIS" - Always Faithful.

Like you said, the Navy deals with ships ("boats" are anything small enough to be carried on a ship, any sailor will tell you). Sometimes, though, a Navy gets into a predicament in which a force on land is needed right away; that's what the Marines originally provided. Almost all navies have them (often by other names, like the French "Maritime Fusiliers" or the Japanese "Special Naval Landing Forces"). Most of these are sailors who have been run through infantry basic training, but the British and Americans do it the other way: their Marines are elite light infantry trained to cooperate with Naval forces.
Nowadays, with the expansion of military hitting power, Marines include not only infantry but armor, artillery, helicopters and ground-support aircraft. But the principle is still there.

The Marines branched off of the Navy. If the Marines need to go any where the Navy takes them there.
Navy basicly works on the ships at sea.
Marines are more land based.
They work well together and you will usually see that Marines go to Navy hosiptals because they don't have corpsman they use the Navy.
And the Navy uses the Marines for large part of security.

the reality is in a number of the previous solutions... yet like an old squid I actually have some gripes for: C. corridor "except for the medics, military pilots and SEALs (particular forces) contained in the military, distinct the sailors not in any respect enter a conflict zone" Gee i became enlisted aircrew and performance over 1000 hours of wrestle-flight time... also remember SEABEES, coxswains, storekeepers and all people on a frigate or destroyer which receives to "play" with different ships or small patrol craft (eg Iran). and Stanley: "military won't be able to swim notwithstanding the marines can." Gee, i became a military Rescue Swimmer and swim instructor... each individual graduates Recruit education as a classification 3 swimmer. the real distinction... Marines grunt alot wink
