The NS-1 protein of influenza is a natural antagonist of interferon alpha and beta, making increased exogenous IFN alpha an potential therapy. In vitro, exogenous IFN alpha 2 may inhibit influenza replication.

Oral IFN alpha is being tried against influenza in chickens, however.
