Fireflies are common all over the Eastern US. PA has named the firefly the state insect!
Fireflies like large, grassy areas and will wait on grass or other plants to signal others as twilight begins to fall. The cemetary near my house has a large grassy lawn, and you can see hundreds of them twinkling in there on summer nights.

Fireflies generally are found in warm, humid areas such as the central and southern United States and are seldom found in the western parts of the U.S. When I lived in Virginia, it was very common to see fields full of them every summer night.

Pretty much all over the northeastern states. Catching fireflies is a childhood right of passage.

many are located in the NE & Mid west regions. They are pretty cool little insects! Late July til mid August are the peak months !!! As a kid , me and my friends caught hundreds of them and used to flip out the the cops on the beat by distracting them away from their cars,(by lighting off firecrackers & running from them) then, have someone sneak into the car and open all the jars ! We'd gather on an unaccessible hill and watch the cops go nuts tryin' to get them out ! AHHH, those were the good old days - none of us got caught !

I live in Tallahassee, FL. There' s plenty here. My mom lives in Mobile, AL. There's a lot there too. It's funny. I'm 35 and I don't remember seeing these a whole lot growing up. I am so glad they're coming back around. They are great little bugs.

Here in east central Missouri on any given night you can stand in my backyard and my little part of the world has hundreds of blinking lights. It reminds you of fireworks.
