They were walking around a ball of some sort. Even if they are going in a straight line, all the ants would have two ants behind them. A straight curved line is still a straight line.

I dropped a gumball out of a srewball, by the way they have two gumballs in them now so i still enjoyed one, and walking aound it in a straight line there is always two ants behind any of them.
